Join us for a 2-hour virtual Exotics Ophthalmology Bootcamp – Common Ophthalmic Diseases in Exotic Species on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

Be among the first 500 participants to register and attend for free! After that, registration is $25 for the next 500 participants.

This session provides a practical framework for diagnosing and managing critical ocular disease in non-domestic species, with a special emphasis on the cornea. After a brief review of mammalian ocular anatomy, the presentation highlights key comparative differences across vertebrate classes, including unique features of birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The program focuses on corneal disease in zoological settings, examining common causes such as trauma, nutritional or environmental factors, and genetic conditions. Attendees will learn standard approaches to corneal ulcer diagnosis and treatment, along with modified therapeutic strategies for exotic patients that cannot tolerate topical medications. The session concludes with a discussion of severe intraocular inflammation, using anterior uveitis as an example of the complexities of ocular disease management in zoo and wildlife medicine.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe key differences in ocular anatomy between mammals and other vertebrate species
  • Identify common causes of corneal ulcers in zoo animals and outline appropriate diagnostic steps
  • Select effective non-topical treatment options for ocular disease in exotic species
