On-Demand Continuing Education Course - Triage And Troubleshooting Emergent Avian Anesthesia Cases
This course is designed for Registered Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants. You'll learn how to safely sedate and anesthetize avian patients, from basic procedures to advanced surgical support. You'll gain critical knowledge of avian-specific anatomy and physiology, pre-anesthetic planning, multimodal pain management, and monitoring techniques. The course covers sedation protocols, inhalant and injectable anesthetics, intubation, ventilation, catheterization (IV and IO), air sac cannulation, and how to avoid and manage complications such as hypothermia and tracheal injury. Ideal for veterinary professionals looking to improve patient safety and outcomes in avian medicine.
Upon completion, participants will receive a CE certificate indicating they have earned 1 hour of on-demand self-study credit.

Jody Nugent-Deal, RVT, VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia) (CP-Exotics)
Jody Nugent-Deal is a dual-certified Veterinary Technician Specialist and currently serves as the Hospital Trainer at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. With over 20 years of experience—including nearly 15 years in Anesthesia and 10 years in the Companion Exotics Service—Jody is a leader in her field. She is a founding member and executive secretary of the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice and past president of the AVTAA. An enthusiastic educator, Jody lectures across North America, teaches online, and offers in-clinic hands-on training through her continuing education company. She has also published extensively on anesthesia and exotic animal medicine.

Refunds for cancellations will be considered if requested by email to svmcontinuinged@ucdavis.edu within two weeks of registration. Cancellations made before accessing the CANVAS platform will receive a refund minus a $5 processing fee. Cancellations are non-refundable once you have accessed the course on the CANVAS platform.
