On-Demand Continuing Education Course - Triage and Critical Care of the Neonatal Foal

This course is designed for Registered Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants and provides essential guidance on recognizing and managing common conditions in newborn foals. It begins with an overview of normal foaling, including the “1-2-3 rule,” to help attendees identify abnormal births and post-foaling concerns. Topics include placentitis, red bag deliveries (premature placental separation), and triage of foals following dystocia, along with related complications. Attendees will also learn neonatal resuscitation techniques and equipment options. The lecture will cover key neonatal conditions—such as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (dummy foal syndrome), meconium aspiration, failure of passive transfer, sepsis, and rib fractures—focusing on risk factors, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis to support optimal outcomes.

Upon completion, participants will receive a CE certificate indicating they have earned 1 hour of on-demand self-study credit.
