Blood Bank Boot Camp will be held at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine from October 28-29, 2023. The Saturday component will feature several lecture topics on the blood bank community, donors, blood typing, and transfusion. Participants will be able to attend the Saturday lectures either on-site or webinar. For the Sunday component, the labs will only be offered on-site only. On-site registration for Saturday is required to register for Sunday's labs.
Sunday's labs will be led by the instructors with participants divided into 3 groups who will rotate between the 3 lab sessions: Collection and Processing Lab, Type and Crossmatch Lab, and Case-Based Discussion.
Collection and Processing Lab
Though there are multiple steps to get from donation to processed blood product, this lab will cover those steps in detail and help to streamline these procedures for your hospital. Participants will gain skills and knowledge related to donor handling techniques, the donation process, blood processing steps for commonly utilized products, and necessary materials and equipment to facilitate these procedures.
Type and Crossmatch Lab
Participants in this lab will gain hands-on experience with common blood typing and crossmatching methods for dogs and cats. Pros, cons, and complications with different methods will be discussed. By the end of the lab, participants should feel comfortable performing these techniques in their own hospitals and laboratories.
Case-Based Discussion
Even with great protocols in place, tricky cases can come up that may lead to questions for people even with significant experience in transfusion medicine and blood banking. This roundtable discussion of cases will highlight some potential questions and complications that may arise when dealing with real patients, donors, and blood banking challenges.

- Kate Farrell DVM, DACVECC

Dr. Kate Farrell received her veterinary degree from the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2013. She undertook a small animal medicine and surgery rotating internship at Colorado State University, as well as an emergency internship at UC Davis. She completed a residency in small animal Emergency and Critical Care at UC Davis and became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2018. Dr. Farrell is now an Assistant Professor of Clinical Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care at UC Davis. Areas of interest include mechanical ventilation, respiratory physiology, transfusion medicine, and blood banking.

Dr. Steven Epstein is a graduate of UC Davis in 2004 and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2010. He is now a Professor of Clinical Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care and Director of the Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine Service. His research interests include Transfusion Medicine and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

Julie Burges received her Doctorate in Public Health in 2019 and is currently an MBA candidate at the University of Georgia. She has worked on and off in the veterinary world since 1991, both in private practice and academia. She started working for UC Davis in September of 2007 as a supervisor for the Small Animal Patient Care Service. She joined the Transfusion Medicine team as their supervisor in September of 2008 and then became the service manager for the Clinical Diagnostic Labs in September of 2013. Her career interests include Veterinary Emergency Preparedness and Idiopathic Aplastic Anemia in feline patients.

Dyne graduated UC Davis with a BS in Animal Science in ‘95. In 1990 she started working at the VMTH as well as other local Small Animal Practices. After graduation, she stayed in the area and became a career staff member working in Small Animal Nursing providing patient care and working with the in-house blood donor dogs.
When Transfusion Medicine department opened in 2007, she transitioned into that area of care and became an integral team member specializing in helping the community based canine donors understand their job and what is expected of them. Dyne also collects blood from multiple species and processes the products into a variety of components.
When Dyne is not at the hospital, she works as an office manager for a private foundation and is a founding partner in Graysing Cattle Company where she raises beef production animals and show calves for 4H and FFA Juniors. In her spare time, she babysits dogs for colleagues and friends. Dyne shares her home with 4 dogs, 5 cats, 1 rabbit, 15 head of cattle and 2 horses. Her Aussie “Cade” and Doberman “Deacon” are current UC Davis Blood Donors. - Sasha Hickman-Beoshanz BS

Following graduation from Fresno State with a B.S in Animal Science, Sasha moved to Davis, CA. Initially, she worked as a technician for a small-animal clinic, before accepting a lab manager position with a biotech company that focused on monoclonal and polyclonal antibody production. In 1998 she began her career at the UCD VMTH. First as a LAICU critical care technician, and then beginning in 2011 as a technician for the Transfusion Medicine Service. It is here she has enjoyed the culmination of her laboratory, small animal and large animal knowledge. Outside of work she is busy caring for her horses and a small herd of Jersey cattle. She also enjoys time spent with family and traveling.
A registration refund will be made, less a $50.00 processing fee, if the cancellation request is received two weeks before the program start date, otherwise, a refund will be made, less a $100.00 processing fee. No refunds will be made after the program start date.
Social Dinner is non-refundable after October 13, 2023 (11:59 p.m. PST).
