The 36th Charles Heumphreus Memorial Equine Podiatry Symposium will be held on-site at the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine on October 25, 2026. The program will offer a comprehensive exploration of equine podiatry, featuring expert presentations and hands-on labs designed to enhance both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Attendees will benefit from insights into advanced diagnostic imaging, shoeing techniques for performance and longevity, and innovative approaches to hoof wall reconstruction. The symposium fosters collaboration between farriers and veterinarians, emphasizing a team approach to equine foot care.
Our distinguished presenters include Dr. Mark Silverman and Ernest Woodward.
Dr. Mark Silverman, a veterinarian since 1994, has spent over 50 years in the equine industry, with experience as a farrier, trainer, and clinician. He specializes in equine foot care, combining research in biomechanics with more than 30 years of expertise in hoof reconstruction and lameness treatment. As founder of Sporthorse Veterinary Services, he has pioneered innovations like standing MRI for horses and was inducted into the International Veterinary Hall of Fame in 2025.
Ernest Woodward is a farrier with over 30 years of experience, specializing in elite dressage horses and working at top competitions including the Olympics and World Equestrian Games. He has contributed to the development of composite and glue-on horseshoes and uses tools like high-speed video analysis to advance hoof care and biomechanics. A partner at the Southern California Equine Podiatry Center, he is recognized for blending traditional farriery with innovative techniques.
The Charles Heumphreus Memorial Equine Podiatry Symposium is an event that has been offered free to farriers and equine veterinarians since 1987. Known simply as “The Heumphreus,” it is the first endowed lecture at the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine and has attracted an impressive list of farrier and veterinary speakers over the past 36 years. The endowment was founded by Dr. Tim O’Brien, UC Davis emeritus faculty radiologist, to honor Charlie’s 18 years of service as the farrier at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Registration for the conference is free, but space is limited.
We will be serving vegetarian meals. Please note that decaffeinated coffee will not be available. If you have specific dietary restrictions, please consider bringing your own food; while we will do our best to accommodate, we may not be able to fulfill all requests.

Program Information
CE Certificates - Veterinarian, Registered Veterinary Technician, and Veterinary Assistant
- The conference has been approved for 7 CEUs.
- Attendance is recorded at the lobby registration area when you arrive at the conference.
- When you arrive, you are responsible with signing in at the registration table in order to receive CE credit for your participation.
- You will receive your CE certificate from the CVPE office after the conference via email approximately 2 weeks after the event.
- Participants are responsible for determining if specific programs are accepted for CE credit by their State Licensing Board.

- The conference has been approved for 7 IAPF CEUs.
- Attendance is recorded at the lobby registration area when you arrive at the conference.
- When you arrive at the conference, you are responsible for signing in at the IAPF sign-in sheet located at the registration table.
- After the conference, you will receive your CE certificate from the International Association of Professional Farriers.

The Charles Heumphreus Endowed Memorial Lectureship supports the annual lectureship. Thanks to the generous support of individuals and organizations over the years, admission to the Charles Heumphreus Endowed Memorial Lectureship remains free of charge. Gifts to the endowment help keep the event free to attendees so that we can continue to present the exceptional speakers and programs that benefit all of us in the equine industry.
