Dr. John Madigan, our program forum chair and the CE office has organized a day which features Dr. Temple Grandin. In the morning, we will be discussing the science behind euthanasia and humane ways to practice it. Dr. Grandin will discuss welfare issues in farm animals including new concepts of humane euthanasia. Dr. Monica Aleman has some exciting new research on the science of what pets experience in euthanasia. Dr. Lynette Hart will then focus on the client and provide information on the effect the loss of pet has on their owner.

For the afternoon, Dr. Madigan has structured a wonderful set of talks around the "squeeze" technique and how it effects the body as a whole through development. Dr. Vinod Bhutani, Professor of Pediatrics (Neonatology) at Stanford will be speaking on what effects swaddling has on the newborn. Dr. Grandin will speak again and discuss her experiences with the “squeeze’ technique that she has used in cattle. Dr. Aleman will report on the new scientific discoveries she has found in the foal and calf with the “squeeze.” Finally, Dr. Madigan will present his research on the maladjusted foal syndrome.
