The Principles of Total Hip Replacement (THR) in Dogs, hosted by the Center for Continuing Professional Education, is an immersive two-day course that combines expert-led lectures with hands-on training to reinforce surgical techniques. The course focuses on total hip replacement (THR) in canine patients.

The course will guide participants through the entire THR process, from patient selection and and preoperative planning to surgical execution and postoperative care. Hands-on labs using cadaver specimens will offer the opportunity to perform and gain practical experience with THR procedures under expert supervision.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify ideal canine candidates for total hip replacement (THR) surgery
  • Explain core principles of THR, including key indications and contraindications
  • Describe and compare THR systems, including implant components and their functions
  • Plan THR procedures based on clinical exams and radiographic assessments
  • Understand the surgical tools and implants used in total hip replacement
  • Perform essential surgical steps, from approach and cup preparation to stem placement and joint reduction

  • Po-Yen Chou

    Dr. Po-Yen Chou is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. He earned his Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) in 2004, followed by a Master of Veterinary Medicine (MVM) in 2008, both from National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan.

    Dr. Chou specializes in small animal orthopedic surgery, with a research focus on minimally invasive orthopedic techniques and surgical site infection prevention. His work aims to improve clinical outcomes and advance surgical approaches in veterinary orthopedics.
     

  • Denis Marcellin-Little DEDV, DACVS (Small Animal), DACVSMR
  • Denis Marcellin-Little

    Dr. Denis Marcellin-Little is the Chair and Professor in the Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DEDV) in 1988 from the National Veterinary School in Toulouse, France, and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (DACVS) in 1997.

    Dr. Marcellin-Little is a specialist in small animal orthopedic surgery, with a research focus on innovative joint replacement techniques, correction of angular limb deformities, and the management of bone tumors using custom limb-sparing implants. His work is at the forefront of advancing orthopedic care through precision surgery and personalized implant design.

     

  • Ming Lu DVM, MVM, MS, DACVS (Small Animal)
  • Ming Lu

    Dr. Ming Lu is a board-certified surgical fellow with the Advanced Veterinary Surgery Service at the University of California, Davis. He works alongside four board-certified faculty surgeons, who together are among the nation’s leading experts in joint replacement surgery and other orthopedic advancements.

Veterinarian

  • This course is recommended for veterinarians with advanced experience in orthopedic. A background in advanced veterinary orthopedics is essential to ensure participants gain the most from the learning experience.
  • You may register one technician from your practice to accompany you in the course during registration.

Resident 

  • You must be a current resident enrolled in a residency program at an accredited university.
  • A 25% reduced-rate registration is available to a limited number of Residents. Once capacity is reached, Residents may opt to pay the regular registration fee or join a waitlist by contacting the CCPE at svmcontinuinged@ucdavis.edu.

Technician

  • Technicians will only be assisting in the lab sessions.
  • Only one technician may attend with the registered veterinarian.
  • The veterinarian may register you at the same time they complete their own registration.
  • Alternatively, to register, please email the CCPE at svmcontinuinged@ucdavis.edu with the name and contact information of the veterinarian from your practice who will be attending. Once their registration is confirmed, the CCPE will send you a link to complete your registration.

Standard Pricing will be in effect from September 26, 2025 after 5 pm to October 24, 2025 at 5 pm (PDT).

Registration includes breakfast, lunch and coffee provided daily. If you have special dietary restrictions, please consider bringing your own food. A microwave will be available, however, a refrigerator will not be available for use. Don't forget to bring your own water bottle for all sessions; there will be a refill station available.

COURSE CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY

  • A refund, minus a 15% processing fee, will be granted if the cancellation request is received at least two weeks before the program start date.
  • For cancellations received less than two weeks before the start date, a refund will be issued, minus a 50% processing fee.
  • Registration is non-refundable after the program start date, including No-Shows. This means that cancellations made before the program begins on the start date are also non-refundable.
