The Center for Continuing Professional Education will host the 2024 Feline Symposium: Update on Feline Pediatric Clinical Trials on November 2, 2024. Join us on-site at UC Davis or virtually via Zoom for this 1-day conference where leading experts in veterinary medicine will share cutting-edge research and insights aimed at improving the health and well-being of our youngest feline companions. This innovative event will explore a range of topics, with a particular focus on the treatment of common feline pediatric ailments through evidence-based approaches.
To start the conference, we will hear topics related to feline pediatric infectious disease from Drs. David Maggs, Karen Vernau, and Catherine Outerbridge. Before the afternoon lunch break, Hannah Shaw will delve into a discussion on neonatal kittens. Hannah's lecture will not be recorded and will not be available for viewing after the conference. If this is your first time seeing Hannah, she will also have a Meet and Greet during the lunch break, so be sure to visit her booth! In the afternoon, Drs. Sina Marsilio, Karen Vernau, Jamie Burkitt, and Sean Hulsebosch will discuss topics about feline pediatric gastrointestinal disease. Come join and learn with us as we dive into this 1-day conference centered around our young feline friends!
Workshop: Hands-On Tube Feeding Demonstration
Nutritional support is crucial for orphaned kittens, especially when they are unable to feed on their own. In this session, Drs. Vernau and Burkitt will explain the indications and procedure for tube-feeding kittens. They will also provide tips and tricks to ensure successful tube feeding. For onsite attendees, break-out sessions will be available to practice this technique with expert instructors' assistance, using kitten feline models. You will learn about the appropriate size and type of feeding tubes, the appropriate positioning of kittens during feeding, and how to troubleshoot common issues that may arise during the process.
While the lecture will be provided via webinar, the workshop is only for onsite attendees. There is no additional fee required, but space is limited. Therefore, please submit your request during the registration process to secure your spot.
SPEAKERS
- Jamie Burkitt DVM, DACVECC
Dr. Jamie Burkitt is an Associate Professor of Clinical Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care at the University of California, Davis. Since board certification in 2005, she practiced across the United States in university and private emergency and specialty settings, until putting down roots at UC Davis in 2017. Her main research interests are prevention of recurrent feline urethral obstruction, endocrine-related emergencies, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. She lives in northern California with her kids and a menagerie of pets.
- Sean Hulsebosch DVM, DACVIM
Dr. Sean Hulsebosch received his DVM from Michigan State University. Following graduation, he completed a rotating internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City and then worked in private general and emergency practice for 10 years in New Jersey. Dr. Hulsebosch then completed a residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of California, Davis. He is currently an assistant clinical professor of small animal internal medicine at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Hulsebosch’s interests include endocrinology, immune-mediated disease, and endoscopy of the urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts.
- David Maggs BVSc, DACVO
Following graduation from the University of Melbourne in 1988, Dr. David Maggs spent 5 years in mixed practice throughout Australia, England, Scotland, and Wales. He then completed small animal and equine internships at Colorado State University, and a research fellowship and comparative ophthalmology residency at the University of Missouri. He was a faculty member at the University of California-Davis for 23 years and has helped train 28 residents. He is an author of Slatter’s Fundamentals of Veterinary Ophthalmology – soon to be released in its 7th edition. David’s major interests are ocular surface disease and feline herpesvirus.
- Sina Marsilio Dr med vet, PhD, DACVIM, DECVIM-CA
Dr. Sina Marsilio received her veterinary degree from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, Germany in 2004. After graduation she also completed a German doctorate program on feline chronic enteropathies with the Department of Pathology in Hanover, Germany, in 2007. Subsequently, Dr. Marsilio continued her clinical training with an internship in private practice and a residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Giessen, Germany and the Royal Veterinary College in London, UK.
She received her Diploma of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM, SAIM) and of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM, CA) in 2014. After her board certification, she extended her training in small animal gastroenterology and joined the Texas A&M Gastrointestinal Laboratory where she conducted a PhD.
She worked on the discovery of novel diagnostic biomarkers for feline chronic enteropathies including histology guided mass spectrometry for the differentiation of feline IBD from lymphoma.
Since August 2019, Dr. Marsilio is part of the faculty at UC Davis as an Assistant Professor in Small Animal Internal Medicine with a clinical and research focus on small animal and comparative gastroenterology.- Catherine Outerbridge DVM, MVSc, DACVD, DACVIM
Dr. Catherine Outerbridge is a Professor of Clinical Dermatology at the University of California Davis and the vice-chair for the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Epidemiology. She is an Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) graduate at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. She completed her Masters of Veterinary Science and a residency in small animal internal medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) at the University of Saskatchewan and then her residency in dermatology at the University of California, Davis. She is a Diplomate of ACVIM in small animal internal medicine and a Diplomate of the ACVD. Dr. Outerbridge has served as the President of the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology, the Secretary of the World Association for Veterinary Dermatology, and President of the Tenth World Congress of Veterinary Dermatology (WCVD10). Her clinical areas of interest include all aspects of clinical dermatology but she has a particular interest in cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease, metabolic skin diseases, infectious skin diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and feline genodermatoses.
- Hannah Shaw
Hannah Shaw, also known as Kitten Lady, is an award-winning kitten rescuer, humane educator, and unwavering animal advocate who has dedicated her life to innovating kitten care and protecting the most vulnerable felines. She is the New York Times bestselling author of Tiny But Mighty, Cats of the World, Kitten Lady’s Big Book of Little Kittens, Kitten Lady’s CATivity Book, and the Adventures in Fosterland series. She is also the founder of Orphan Kitten Club, a national 501(c)3 nonprofit organization saving the live of neonatal kittens through targeted grants for animal shelters, ethical pediatric feline research, and nursery care.
- Karen Vernau DVM, MAS, DACVIM (Neurology)
Dr. Karen Vernau is a clinical professor of Neurology/Neurosurgery and is a member of the Access to Care Service at UC Davis. She has an interest in feline neonatal medicine and strives to improve the health and welfare of kittens.
She serves as faculty mentor for the Orphan Kitten Project (OKP) at UC Davis, which is a veterinary student-run non-profit organization. She also serves as a faculty mentor to veterinary students in the Fracture Program Club, where members foster animals enrolled in the Fracture Program for Shelter Animals.
Dr. Vernau and her family foster have been fostering kittens together since 2013. They have one rescue dog and four foster fail cats.

Service Animals
- Registered service animal are welcome to the conference. Comfort or emotional support animals and other non-service animals (pets) are not permitted. Service animals are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for persons with disabilities. Service animals in training are permitted.
A refund will be made, less a $45.00 processing fee, if the cancellation request is received in writing two weeks before the program start date, otherwise registration will be non-refundable. All requests must be made in writing. Submit cancellation request via email to svmcontinuinged@ucdavis.edu.
