SPEAKERS
  • Laura Harlan Backus MPH, DVM, PhD, DACVPM
  • Laura Backus

Dr. Laura Backus completed her bachelor’s degree, master’s in public health, and veterinary medicine degrees at Colorado State University. After practicing small animal medicine for a few years, she went on to pursue a PhD in Epidemiology at the University of California, Davis with Dr. Janet Foley.

Her doctoral and post-doctoral research there focused on tick-borne diseases that are shared between humans and animals, particularly Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Through this research and related projects, she had the opportunity to work with tick-borne rickettsial pathogens of domestic dogs and wildlife throughout southern California and Baja California, Mexico. She is currently an Assistant Professor at CalPoly in San Luis Obispo, CA.

  • Jeannine Berger DVM, DACVB, DACAW, CAWA
  • Jeannine Berger

Dr. Jeannine Berger obtained her veterinary degree and completed her doctoral thesis in Zurich, Switzerland. In 1998 she moved to California to work at UC Davis, where she held multiple positions within the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology.

Dr. Berger is a strategic leader and one of the few veterinarians that is double boarded with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists as well as the American College for Animal Welfare. She has over 30 years of proven experience in animal welfare with a track record of simultaneously improving animal well-being and operational efficiency. She has a passion for behavior medicine and welfare with success in public speaking, research and leadership. In 2019 she was awarded the Bronze Medal for Global Animal Welfare by the World Veterinary Association for her excellent contributions to promoting the welfare of animals.

  • Janet Foley DVM, PhD
  • Janet Foley

Dr. Janet Foley is a veterinarian and disease ecologist who leads tick research at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine/CDC Pacific Southwest Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Disease. She studies the interface of human, wildlife, and domestic animal disease through field, epidemiological, and mathematical modeling approaches. Her over-arching research goals are to understand tick-borne disease persistence in ecologically complex communities, and to improve human, animal, and ecosystem health.

Principle research projects include the ecology of RMSF at the US-Mexico border and changes to tick-borne disease ecology associated with controlled burns and wildfire. Her laboratory also aims to provide excellence in mentorship of junior scientists, particularly women and populations that are traditionally marginalized in science. She supports post-doctoral scholars, graduate students in Ecology, Epidemiology, Preventive Veterinary Medicine (PVM), and undergraduate interns; she also serves as Chair of the PVM graduate group.
Dr. Foley has published more than 250 peer-reviews scientific papers including reviews and book chapters on numerous tick-borne diseases including RMSF. She has received and managed funding for tick-borne disease research from NIH, CDC, and private corporations and non-profit foundations. As tick lead at PacVec, she is responsible for outreach and education to the public and medical professionals, liaises with public health and vector control scientists, supervises training and recruitment of junior scientists in medical entomology and epidemiology, and performs research to advance the mission of protecting people from tick-borne disease.
