Program
The Center for Continuing Professional Education is proud to host the UCD Companion Animal Infectious Disease Course: Bugs, Drugs, and Diagnostics - Renewed Approaches to Canine and Feline Infectious Diseases at the SpringHill Suites in Napa Valley from May 5th - 7th, 2023. This course will feature some amazing UC Davis faculty, staff and guest speakers.
Day 1: A welcome reception with SpringHill Suites preferred wine and hors d'oeuvres will be followed by a presentation on Testing, testing... getting the most bang for your buck when testing for infectious disease with Jane Sykes, BVSc (Hons), PhD, DACVIM.
Day 2: Our speakers will present information on canine respiratory disease and pneumonia, approach to antibiotic resistant infections, new diagnosis and treatment, and zoonotic diseases in small animal practices.
Day 3: On the last day, our speakers will discuss the threat of coccidioidomycosis, identify treatment to resistant canine hookworms and giardia strains, review renewed approaches to leptospirosis, and look at case examples on fevers of unknown origin.

Jonathan Dear, DVM, MAS, DACVIM (SAIM)

Dr. Jonathan Dear earned his DVM degree from the University of Georgia, Athens. He completed his MAS in clinical research and a residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of California, Davis and is now a small animal internal medicine specialist at University of California, Davis. His clinical interests includes infectious, urinary and respiratory diseases of dogs and cats as a model of disease for humans.

Krystle Reagan, DVM, PhD, DACVIM

Dr. Krystle Reagan is an assistant professor of small animal internal medicine at the University of California, Davis. She obtained her veterinary degree and PhD in microbiology at Colorado State University. Upon graduating, she completed a one year small animal rotating internship at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital followed by a small animal internal medicine residency at UC Davis. She then completed a two-year small animal infectious disease fellowship. She is board certified in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Her areas of research include development of novel infectious disease diagnostics and the use of artificial intelligence in biomedicine.

Christian M. Leutenegger, Dr.Med.Vet., BSc, PhD, FVH

Dr. Christian M. Leutenegger is director of molecular diagnostics at Antech Diagnostics and Imaging. He graduated from the University of Zurich Veterinary School of Medicine in 1992. He completed a doctoral thesis developing novel vaccines for FIV. Dr. Leutenegger completed a PhD developing the first DNA vaccines in veterinary medicine. In 1999, he founded the Molecular Core Facility at the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis. In 2006, he joined IDEXX Laboratories, building a high-capacity molecular diagnostic platform for infectious diseases based on syndromic panels. After 13 years, he joined Antech Diagnostics to expand into molecular genetics and cancer diagnostics, and to advance their infectious disease detection platform.

Emmelyn Hsieh, DVM, DACVIM

Dr. Emmelyn Hsieh is the current Small Animal Clinical Infectious Diseases fellow at UC Davis. She obtained her veterinary degree at UC Davis, after which she completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at the University of Minnesota. She then returned to UC Davis for her residency in small animal internal medicine and is now board certified in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Her clinical and research interests include infectious diseases of dogs and cats, antibiotic stewardship, as well as lower urinary tract disease.
