Dr. Olav Oftedal achieved his academic degrees from Harvard (B.A. in biology, 1971) and Cornell (Ph.D. in nutrition, 1981).  He joined the Smithsonian Institution - National Zoo as an animal nutritionist in 1978.  At the National Zoo he developed a nutrition research program to improve zoo animal diets and to understand the nutritional ecology of animals in the wild, culminating in studies in Antarctica in 2006-2007.  In 2008 he moved to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Maryland as emeritus scientist.  Much of his ongoing research focuses on nutritional analysis of milk and other animal foods, and on assessing lactation strategies in a variety of mammals.  He is investigating the paleobiological origin and early evolution of mammary glands and their secretions, including milk proteins and oligosaccharides.  When not involved in research, Olav enjoys walking on Chesapeake Bay beaches with Alex, his 100 pound Doberman rescue.
